What is pilates?

Pilates is a form of exercise, developed by Joseph Pilates, which focuses on stretching and strengthening the whole body to improve balance, muscle strength, flexibility and posture.  The exercises tone and strengthen without adding muscle bulk.  It is a totally balanced workout, working on quality not quantity.

In through the nose, out through the mouth.

It may seem obvious to us, but getting used to breathing during a Pilates class can be difficult! A lot of people say they forget how to breathe during a Pilates class, and that’s perfectly normal.

If you’ve ever tried yoga you’ll notice that the breathing techniques are very different from those used in Pilates, it doesn’t mean that one is right and the other is wrong or one is better than the other, it simply means that the breath is used for specific purposes that work the body in different ways.

Pilates focuses on three-dimensional breathing or rib cage breathing. By focusing our breath on the back and sides of the rib cage as we inhale through the nose, tight muscles around the chest and shoulder region of our body relax and tension is released. Subversively, when we exhale through our mouth, gentle contraction occurs in our abdominals and pelvic floor. Breathing is a powerful tool that activates particular muscles throughout the body and ensures that exercises can be performed with increased safety.
